We are immensely saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Professor Ray Markey on the 28th April 2022. Ray was an outstanding scholar, stalwart and friend of the industrial relations community in Australia, New Zealand, whose influence and great work was felt and known around the world.
A beloved member of the Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australia and New Zealand (AIRAANZ), Ray was a high-respected, generous and committed member of the AIRAANZ executive committee, holding many senior leadership positions over the years.
His contribution to AIRAANZ was recognised when he won the won the Vic Taylor Distinguished Long-Term Contribution Award in 2018 and Honorary Lifetime Membership in 2022. In awarding his life membership, Professor Bradon Ellem, noted “It is, we believe, hard to think of a colleague in AIRAANZ who has made such a wide-ranging contribution as a researcher and as a leader of the discipline, and most particularly fostered Trans-Tasman scholarship”.
In short, Ray embodied the true values and ethos of the Trans-Tasman spirit of AIRAANZ. He was responsible for fostering the careers of many academics in our community and leaves a fine legacy to those who follow behind him.
He will be greatly missed. AIRAANZ will be poorer for his absence.
We offer our sincere condolences and sympathy to Fran and his family and friends at this very sad time| E aroha nui atu ana ki a koutou i tēnei wā Fran and whanau.
